“Dirk Kuyt Is A Pin-Up Boy”: Football Posters Are Making A Fashionable Comeback

I’m back off to Uni soon and as I’m moving into a new place, I thought I’d look for some cool football posters to brighten up my room. Thus far, my search has been a mixed bag of frustration and delight.

Because there was a time when the only posters I’d be happy to put up on my wall were that of movies and football posters just weren’t cool enough. To have a tacky vision of Rooney, Fat Frank or Stevie G watching your every move wasn’t (and still isn’t) a great thing to have hanging over you, nor was it a particularly interesting ice-breaker for your ‘guests’. But not anymore. Yes, football posters are on their way back from the dead, and better still, the battle for your wall space is actually intensifying. Blue tack at the ready, folks.

Dan Leydon (@blastedfrench) HotFootyNews

Recently celebrated on the Guardian’s favourite 5 things from the week, Dan Leydon is the Twitter-man’s choice. His website, HotFootyNews, has surpassed the impressive total of 150,000 page views and his designs are a brilliant mirage of cartooned-up football superstars.

However, by far his most popular design of recent has to be this excellent depiction of Barcelona’s Xavi, coupled with a more-than-decent poem, written by the man himself.

Oh The Humanity (@ohthehumanityyy)

Oh the Humanity’s website/works seem to be somewhat of an undiscovered diamond in the rough that I stumbled up through, you guessed it, Twitter. Open to requests and avidly Liverpudlian biased, his style consists of an array of legends of the game doing their thing next to appropriate quotes.

Who'd of thought, Dirk Kuyt, a pin-up boy...

A classic quote from Bill Shankly.

Zoran Lucic (@zoranlucic) Suker For Soccer

A matter of opinion, but in my eyes I’ve left the best ’til last. Zoran Lucic is a Bosnian with an extreme talent for putting the world’s best onto your walls (even though he’s not selling his designs just yet). Check out these absolute beauties;

Xavi seems a popular choice for the designers.

A fat Puskas has never looked so cool.

Der Kaiser on a poster. I said nothing.

Don’t worry though chaps and chapettes, there are plenty of people (including FourFourTwo) urging Lucic to let us at ‘em and he’s working away at getting the designs sorted for general sale, so hold yer horses. For a full gallery of Lucic’s work and to see who else he’s put in a frame click here.
